The Rig Veda

Oldest book of the Vedas, it has Sanskrit mantras dating back to 1500 B.C. - 1000 B.C. It is a collection of mantras with of 1,017 hymns covering about 10,600 stanzas. The Rig Veda details the social, religious, economic and political background of the Rig-Vedic civilization.

The Yajur Veda

This section of the Vedas is a liturgical collection and was made to be the guidebook for the priests who perform sacrificial acts muttering simultaneously the prose prayers and the sacrificial formulae. It is predicated to have been mostly composed during c. 1200-1000 BCE.

The Sama Veda

Third of the four Vedas, is it next in sanctity and liturgical importance to the Rig Veda. This section has collection of hymns and detached verses. Since most of it's text is borrowed from Rig Veda, it is also called the reduced version of the Rig Veda.

The Atharva Veda

The last book of the Vedas, this book has hymns that are varied character than when compared to hymns in the Rig Veda. These Hymns are also in much simpler language. Dating back to between c. 1200-1000 BCE, it is a collection of spells and incantations, speculative hymns and apotropaic charms.

This DVD also contains the two primary versions of Yajur Veda, namely Krishna Yajur Veda and Shukla Yajur Veda. Both have the verses needed for rituals but Krishna Yajur Veda has the Brahmana prose discussions within the Samhita, whereas the Shukla Yajurveda has separately a Brahmana text, the Shatapatha Brahmana.
